Which Bank Exam is better, IBPS or SBI?

I was recently approached by one of my students asking this question. I found the topic very interesting and so, I am going to write a complete article on it to help students preparing for the bank exams. The question as asked by my student,

Q: I am preparing for banking exams, but I want to focus on a single one so that I can put more efforts for it. Which one I choose between SBI and IBPS exams?

A: Though the question looks very simple, the answer is not. You cannot declare a banking exam better just because you think it is unless you have some effective factors to prove your statement. Where the State Bank of India (SBI) is the largest public sector bank in India, IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) involves some of the most reputed private sector banks including Bank of Baroda and Punjab National Bank. It is not an easy competition

List of latest SBI Recruitment 2014

sbi vs ibps bank exam

Here, we will try to compare these two exams based on two factors: Selection process and Banking values

Selection process

Starting from the basic, let’s talk about the selection process of IBPS PO and SBI PO. Both these exams include a written examination for PO (Probationary Officer) selection.

IBPS PO CWE exam syllabus includes following topics: Reasoning, English, Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness (special reference to Banking Industry) and Computer knowledge

The written exam is followed by a Personal Interview

While SBI PO exam syllabus has following subjects: Reasoning (High Level), English Language (Grammar, Vocabulary, Comprehension etc.), Data Analysis & Interpretation, and General Awareness, Marketing & Computers

SBI PO exam also involves an English language Description test followed by Group Discussion and Personal Interview rounds

Other important points

  • IBPS Quantitative Aptitude test includes only Arithmetic questions while IBPS QA test Data Analysis & Interpretation
  • IBPS General awareness test focus more on banking sector while SBI doesn’t
  • SBI written exam is followed by a written descriptive test, GD and Personal interview
  • SBI selection process is based on the practical approach and requires thorough knowledge of the subjects

SBI Jobs 2014

The above points signify that SBI bank’s selection procedure is tougher than that of IBPS, but this is worth it. Here is how

Banking values

SBI recruits candidates for a long term. Most of their leaders and managers are selected from these entry level POs and other officers. This is why they want the best people to work with them. Their selection procedure may be a little harder, but it is based on the real-time values. So, if you are looking for a long-term and secure career, you must go with the SBI bank.

But, that doesn’t mean that Private sector banks are not good; they are actually very good. PNB, BOB and HDFC are some of the top private banks in India.

Here are some other points to put a light on SBI vs IBPS (private) banks

  • SBI bank provides more and better growth opportunities than any private sector bank
  • The starting basic pay of an SBI employee is higher than that of any private sector bank
  • Private banks have a decent working environment with better infrastructure facilities
  • Both SBI and private banks give their employees many benefits other than the monetary ones

Well, I have included all the details I had, in order to differentiate between SBI and IBPS banks based on the selection process and the working. Honestly, you cannot put one of them as the best as it is certainly not. I would rather suggest everyone to attempt for all bank exams including SBI, IBPS and others. Just put in your best efforts and see how that works.
